Awutu Senya East cracks down on improper waste disposal

The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly has set up a task force to arrest individuals within Kasoa who dispose of waste into drains.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East, Michael Asuma Mensah, the assembly has observed that some households dispose of human excreta through pipes connected to drains.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Asuma Mensah cautioned residents of the area to desist from activities which will reduce the lifespan of drains.

“We have set up a taskforce to arrest people have channeled septic tanks into drains. They are warned. When refuse is dumped in this drain it will get stuck beneath bridges and this will affect the purpose of the drains and bridges, which is to curb flooding in the communities.

Residents must endeavor to do the right thing to ensure that the Opeikuma bridge lasts for long.”

The Managing Director of Radiance Petroleum Limited, Emmanuel Pobee, noted that residents of Opeikuma in the Awutu Senya municipality have been battling with the issue of flooding for over 20 years.

This compelled them to construct a bigger bridge over the Okurudu stream to enable the free flow of water.

“The construction of the bridge was necessary for this community and cost GHc 600,000. But the cost increased when we dredged the drains to ensure the free flow of the rainwater.

For over twenty years the issue of flooding has been a challenge to residents of Opeikuma. An NGO, ten years ago constructed the culvert which was smaller and couldn’t bear the water passing through it, therefore, the construction of a bigger culvert was necessary.”
