AWA confirms emergency landing in Lagos after medical incident involving Ghanaian passenger

Africa World Airlines (AWA) has confirmed that Flight AW255, traveling from Abuja, Nigeria, made an unscheduled landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on March 12, 2025, due to a medical emergency involving a Ghanaian passenger.

On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, GhanaWeb learned that a passenger suffered a medical crisis just 20 minutes after takeoff at 1:00 PM Abuja time.

Providing further updates on the matter, AWA, in a statement issued on March 13, 2025, noted that upon detecting the situation, its well-trained crew swiftly activated emergency protocols and coordinated with aviation authorities to facilitate a priority landing in Lagos.

The airline also stated that out of respect for privacy, it will not disclose further details regarding the individual’s condition.

“However, we confirm that the passenger is receiving appropriate care, and AWA is in direct contact with their family to offer support.

“We sincerely apologize to all passengers for any inconvenience caused and extend our gratitude for their understanding and cooperation during this unforeseen circumstance,” Head of Communications for Africa World Airlines, Godfred Essel is quoted to have said.

The airline further reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety, emphasising the preparedness of its crew and continuous improvements in safety protocols.

“Africa World Airlines is committed to adhering to the highest safety standards and protocols. Our teams undergo rigorous training to ensure preparedness for such scenarios, and we continually review our procedures to enhance passenger safety and comfort,” the statement concluded.
