Audit Service chair must resign – PPP Operations Director

The Director of Operations for the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu wants the Board Chairman of the Audit Service to resign following reports of interference in the work of the Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo.

“The board chairman should resign…We have seen a track record of this Auditor General and this person is pushing the envelope and then no other person than your board chair who is trying to be on your way,” he said on Citi FM’s news analysis programme, The Big Issue on Saturday.

The Auditor General petitioned the president complaining that the Board Chairman of the Audit Service, Professor Edward Dua Agyeman is unlawfully interfering in his work.

A letter the Auditor General wrote to the President, outlined several instances interference in his work by the Board Chair.

The Presidency subsequently set-up a committee to investigate the concerns expressed by Mr. Domelevo.

But Professor Agyeman insists that he’s done nothing wrong “it is not that we do not want to work with him.”

“He is insisting that he is not answerable to the Board and that whatever instructions we give he will not take,” Prof. Agyeman explained.

But Nana Ofori Owusu said Mr. Agyeman must go and must be replaced with someone who will complement the efforts of Mr. Domelevo.

“Outside of the book somebody has emerged and all of a sudden is giving credibility to the function of the auditor general and that person is making inroads…a person who when he was appointed there was a lot of issues around him. And obviously, this person has shown great resolve. And in advancing his work, a board chairman is trying to stifle the work that this man is doing.”

Prof. Agyeman who was once an Auditor General, according to PPP’s Operations Director should not be the one to frustrate Domelevo.

“He [Prof. Agyeman] didn’t make the name like this Auditor General. Let’s remove that obstacle from this man’s face. Let a new person be brought on board,” he added.

Investigate the Auditor General’s complaints quickly
In a related development, a coalition of civil society organizations dedicated to the fight against corruption in Ghana has called on the government to fast-track investigations into complaints of interference by the Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo in his work.

“We have taken notice of the swift action of the President, once the matter became public, to investigate the matter, and we urge that this task is undertaken with alacrity to ensure the ongoing work of the Auditor General and the morale of the Service is not affected,” the group said in a statement.
