Audio: Why people commit suicide – Dr Akwasi Osei explains
The Chief Executive of the Ghana Mental Authority, Dr Akwasi Osei has been detailing why people resort to suicide to end their lives.
According to him, depression is the commonest cause of suicide.
He said scientific evidence shows that for every 10 people who attempt suicide or commit suicide, nine of them have mental health problem or 10 had depression.
“Depression therefore is the commonest cause of suicide. Depression is a condition that can affect anybody and when you get depression, you begin to see yourself as useless as not achieved anything. You begin to feel guilty,” he said.
“If a person commits suicide, what it means is that society did not recognise that he had a problem so that they could help and you have allowed him to exit through suicide,” he noted.
