A kidney specialist has urged Ghanaians to be cautious of their lifestyle choices to avoid getting kidney diseases.

Dr Elliot Koranteng, a Nephrologist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital said the upsurge of kidney diseases in Ghana is due to unhealthy lifestyles of citizens.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday as part of World Kidney discussions, Dr Elliot said kidney dysfunctions are caused by the progression of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and inflammation of the kidneys.

The Nephrologist also outlined other causes to include too much intake of alcohol, herbal medicines, aphrodisiacs and smoking.

“Kidney diseases manifest themselves when they reach advanced stages so we must live a healthy lifestyle and go for regular checkups,” he added.

Dr. Koranteng expressed worry about the low public education about the risk of developing kidney diseases which which he says are killing many in the country.

The Nephrologist said weekly dialysis of a patient cost about GH¢500 apart from the drugs used to control the blood pressure thus people must take precautions against the terminal disease.

Dr Elliot Koranteng stressed the need for more awareness to be created of the disease to save people from developing the disease.
