Asantehene Lecture at British Museum: Watch arrival of Otumfuo, Kufuor, NAPO, others

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Friday, July 19, 2024, delivered a historic lecture at the British Museum in the United Kingdom.

The lecture, which was on the theme, “Asante Culture and Heritage: Past and Present,” reflected on events in Kumasi during the Asantehene’s Silver Jubilee, including the homecoming exhibition at the Manhyia Palace Museum.

Visuals of the event popping up show a host of notable Ghanaians, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor, gracing the event.

One of the videos shows the Asantehene, as usual, arriving in style at the British Museum to deliver his lecture.

He arrived at the museum in a classic Rolls-Royce Phantom VII and was received by the museum’s officials amid chants.

The videos also show the arrival of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; as well as a number of members of Ghana’s Parliament and government officials.

The Asantehene, during his lecture, among other things, expressed his frustrations about British laws preventing the return of artefacts of the Ashanti Kingdom that they looted during the Sagrenti War in 1874.

He added that he could not comprehend why the laws barring the return of the looted artefacts are still in force even though it has been generally accepted that the said items were acquired by the British illegally.
