Asamoah Gyan appeals GH¢1 million judgment for malicious prosecution

The ruling, handed down by Justice Ernest Owusu-Dapaa, found Gyan liable for malicious prosecution following a case filed by Anthony Osarfo.

On December 8, 2023, the court ruled in favour of the entertainment journalist, ordering Gyan to compensate Anthony with damages exceeding one million cedis.

However, Maurice Ampaw, the lawyer representing Anthony Osarfo, revealed that Asamoah Gyan has refused to comply with the court’s order to pay the GH¢1 million judgment debt.

According to him, Gyan has chosen to appeal the decision.

“Asamoah Gyan hasn’t paid the one million; he has taken the case to the appeals court. He said he is not satisfied with the ruling. I am still handling the case,” Maurice Ampaw stated during an interview on the Delay Show.

The legal dispute began in 2015 when Asamoah Gyan and his manager, Samuel Anim Addo, had Anthony Osarfo arrested and prosecuted for alleged extortion.

After the acquittal of the case involving Gyan and Sarah Kwablah, Anthony Osarfo pressed charges for malicious prosecution.

The court’s ruling found that Gyan’s manager had provided false information to the police to prosecute Anthony Osarfo.

In its judgment, the court awarded Anthony GH¢900,000 in damages, GH¢111,000 for lost income spanning 111 months, and GH¢60,000 in legal costs, totaling GH¢1,071,000 against both Gyan and his manager, Samuel Anim Addo.
