United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed President Donald Trump’s announcement to extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

According to a spokesperson for the secretary-general’s office, the decision is being viewed as a positive step toward reducing tensions and creating room for diplomatic progress between the two countries.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the ceasefire extension is an important move toward de-escalation and provides critical space for diplomacy and confidence-building between Washington and Tehran.

The statement comes at a sensitive time as negotiations continue over the broader conflict and regional security concerns. The ceasefire was initially set to expire, but Trump announced that it would remain in place until talks are concluded.

The United Nations has urged all sides to make use of the opportunity by respecting the ceasefire terms and avoiding any actions that could reignite tensions.

Dujarric said the secretary-general’s office encourages every party involved to refrain from violating the truce and to participate constructively in ongoing negotiations.

The UN believes sustained dialogue remains the best path toward preventing further escalation in the region, where recent tensions have raised concerns over shipping routes, military confrontation and global economic stability.

Guterres also expressed support for the role being played by Pakistan in helping facilitate discussions between the United States and Iran.

According to the UN, Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts could help create the conditions needed for a broader and more lasting agreement.

Dujarric added that the secretary-general hopes the mediation efforts will contribute to a comprehensive and durable resolution to the conflict.

Pakistan has recently hosted discussions aimed at easing tensions, although previous rounds of talks did not produce an immediate breakthrough. Still, international support for mediation efforts appears to be growing.

The United Nations has repeatedly called for restraint in the Middle East and warned that renewed conflict could have serious humanitarian and economic consequences beyond the region.

Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire has therefore been welcomed by global leaders who see diplomacy as the best option for long-term peace.

While negotiations remain complex, the UN’s response signals cautious optimism that the ceasefire could become the foundation for a more stable relationship between the United States and Iran.

Observers say the coming days will be crucial, as both countries face pressure to maintain calm while working toward a formal agreement.
