The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested six Chinese nationals for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities along the Nyaase River during a targeted anti-galamsey operation.
The suspects were reportedly picked up during a swoop aimed at cracking down on unauthorized mining activities that continue to threaten water bodies, farmlands, and surrounding communities.
Officials said the operation forms part of ongoing nationwide efforts to combat illegal mining and protect natural resources from environmental destruction.
During the raid, security personnel are said to have seized mining equipment and other tools believed to have been used in the unlawful operation.
Authorities have repeatedly warned that illegal mining along rivers and forest reserves poses serious risks, including water pollution, land degradation, and loss of livelihoods for local residents.
NAIMOS reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying operations against galamsey and stated that both foreign nationals and locals found breaking Ghana’s mining laws will face the full force of the law.
The latest arrests have once again sparked calls for stricter enforcement measures and tougher penalties to help curb illegal mining activities across the country.
