Asante Kotoko SC goalkeeper Mohamed Camara has been handed a five-match suspension and fined GH¢20,000 following a disciplinary ruling over an incident involving a match official in the Ghana Premier League.
The decision was announced after the Ghana Football Association Disciplinary Committee found the player guilty of misconduct, including assaulting a referee after a league match.
According to reports, the incident occurred after Kotoko’s fixture against Karela United FC, where tensions reportedly continued after the final whistle. Camara was accused of confronting and physically assaulting the referee during a post-match altercation.
The disciplinary committee ruled that his behaviour violated the regulations governing player conduct, particularly rules protecting referees and ensuring discipline in the game.
As part of the sanction, Camara has been banned from all official matches for five games and ordered to pay a fine of GH¢20,000 within a specified period. Failure to comply with the financial penalty could lead to further disciplinary measures.
The ruling takes immediate effect, meaning the goalkeeper will miss several important matches for Asante Kotoko SC as the team continues its league campaign.
The decision has been described as part of the Ghana Football Association’s strict approach to maintaining discipline and protecting match officials from abuse or violence during competitions.
Football authorities have consistently warned players and officials that misconduct toward referees will not be tolerated, especially in high-pressure league fixtures where emotions often run high.
Camara’s suspension is expected to be a setback for Kotoko, as he has been an important part of the team’s squad. His absence will force the club to depend on other goalkeeping options in upcoming matches.
The incident has also renewed discussions about respect for referees in Ghanaian football and the need for stronger enforcement of rules to ensure the safety of match officials.
