Families in Kenya have issued urgent appeals to authorities after learning that their loved ones were allegedly deceived into joining the Russian military and deployed to fight in the war in Ukraine.
According to relatives, the affected individuals were recruited under false pretences, with promises of legitimate work opportunities abroad. They claim their family members were misled about the nature of the jobs and only later discovered that they had been enlisted into military operations connected to Russia’s armed forces.
The families say communication with their loved ones has been limited, and in some cases, completely lost, increasing fear and anxiety about their safety. Many relatives have expressed deep concern over the dangerous conditions their family members now face in a foreign conflict zone.
Community members and human rights advocates have joined the calls for action, urging Kenyan authorities to intervene diplomatically and take steps to secure the safe return of those affected. They argue that citizens should not be exploited through deceptive recruitment practices that place their lives in danger.
Relatives are also calling for investigations into recruitment networks allegedly responsible for luring young people into such arrangements. They believe organised groups may be targeting vulnerable individuals with false job offers, taking advantage of economic hardship and unemployment.
The situation has sparked wider national concern, raising questions about the protection of citizens abroad and the responsibilities of governments in preventing human exploitation and trafficking under the guise of employment.
Families continue to appeal for urgent diplomatic engagement, stressing that their loved ones should not be forced to participate in a war they never intended to join. They are calling on authorities to prioritise the matter as a humanitarian issue and act swiftly to bring the affected individuals home safely.
