Security agencies have arrested two individuals in the Central Region for their alleged involvement in illegal wood cutting activities, as part of ongoing efforts to curb environmental crimes.
According to police sources, the suspects were apprehended following intelligence gathered from residents who reported suspicious logging activities in a forested area within the region. Acting swiftly on the information, law enforcement officers moved to the location and arrested the two men while they were allegedly engaged in cutting timber without the required authorization.
The suspects are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations. Authorities believe the men may be linked to a wider network involved in unauthorized logging, which has been a persistent problem in several forest zones across the country.
Illegal logging continues to pose a serious threat to Ghana’s forest resources, contributing to deforestation, soil erosion, and the loss of wildlife habitats. Environmental experts have warned that continued destruction of forest reserves could have long-term consequences for climate resilience and sustainable development.
Police and forestry officials have reiterated their commitment to enforcing forestry regulations and protecting natural resources. They have also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and support law enforcement by reporting illegal wood cutting and other environmental crimes.
Further investigations are underway, and the suspects are expected to be processed for court as authorities work to clamp down on illegal logging activities in the region.
