Are you mad? – A Plus fumes over violent #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest

A Plus has condemned the ongoing violence associated with the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests in Accra.

What was intended to be a peaceful demonstration aimed at drawing government attention to critical national issues such as galamsey, socio-economic injustice, unemployment, rising poverty, and corruption, among others has escalated into chaos, with protesters damaging property belonging to the ruling NPP.

Demonstrators have reportedly set fire to the New Patriotic Party’s campaign materials, including flags, banners, billboards, and posters, in the middle of the street.

The situation has also escalated into a standoff between the police and protesters, with roadblocks established from the 37 Military Hospital to Jubilee House in response to the unrest, resulting in several arrests.

However, in reaction to the violence, A Plus has expressed strong disapproval.

He has stated that this behaviour is not what a democratic protest should entail, emphasising that demonstrators have no right to destroy property belonging to others.

“I don’t condone nonsense. Ghanaians shouldn’t participate in this demonstration. Listen very carefully, let those who want to indulge in it, do it…but I’m pleading with the rest of us not to participate in this.

“You cannot stage a demonstration and end up destroying people’s properties. Destroying people’s billboards and other things is the height of it. Are you mad? Is that the democracy you keep talking about,” he fumed on UTV’s United Showbiz.

He added, “We have just two months left for the elections to begin and you’re doing this? You want to demonstrate and you’re being violent. If the country becomes ungovernable, how then do we vote for the leader we want?

A Plus also insisted that the police should take firm action against anyone engaging in violence during the protests, asserting that the arrests made so far are justified.

Members of the Democracy Hub initiated the three-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration starting on Saturday, September 2024, from the Liberation Road Roundabout in Accra.
