Approve anti-LGBTQ bill – Catholic Bishops tells Akufo-Addo

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called on President Akufo-Addo to promptly approve the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill

According to them, the bill is very important as it aligns with the moral values of Ghanaians.

“We urge the President to assent to this Bill, which we believe reflects the moral convictions of nearly all Ghanaians. We see no reason for the President’s delay in taking action on this matter,” the Bishops stated.

The appeal was made during the Conference’s Annual Plenary Assembly, held from November 8 to 16, 2024, at the Pope John Paul II Formation and Training Centre in Ofoase Kokoben, Obuasi, Ashanti Region.

The Bishops expressed their frustration over what they termed unjustified delays in approving the bill.

“In fact, the reasons given for the delay are nothing more than excuses. This is not about discrimination, but about preserving our moral fabric and protecting traditional marriage and the family as the foundation of our society,” they added.

They emphasised that the bill is in line with their commitment towards upholding the sanctity of families and promoting values rooted in both cultural and Christian beliefs.

“The Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill has ignited passionate discussions across the country. As shepherds of the Church, we support this bill because it reflects our commitment to preserving the sanctity of the family and upholding the traditional values that are part of our cultural and Christian heritage,” the Bishops said.

Background

Three years ago, some members of parliament led by Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George, introduced the anti-LGBTQ+ bill which after several back and forths, did not get the needed approval from President Akufo-Addo.

The bill is currently under contention as it has been forwarded to the Supreme Court for further deliberations.
