Akufo-Addo gov’t doing better than Mahama did – Baako backs Bawumia

Veteran journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako says the current administration led by President Akufo-Addo, has performed better than its predecessor.

Measuring the state of the economy in first two years of the two regimes, Kweku Baako said the economy is in better health under the current administration than it was, during the period John Dramani Mahama was President.

“There’s no doubt that the Akufo-Addo administration has done far better than the Mahama administration; it’s as simple as that, the figures and the records support it,” Baako scored the Akufo-Addo government’s management of the economy.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) had criticised the government following the recent depreciation of the cedi, calling into question the competence of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the head of the Economic Management Team.

But addressing a townhall meeting on Wednesday, April 2, Dr. Bawumia, defended the management of the economy especially the local currency in the last two years that New Patriotic Party (NPP), took over the reign of government under the leadership of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawunia, accused the NDC of “plunging Ghana into a deep fiscal hole. This poor state of public finances, weak policy implementation and lack of policy credibility resulted in Ghana requesting an IMF bailout in August 2014.”

Per statistics presented by the Vice President, the worst rate of depreciation under the Akufo-Addo government is 8.4% recorded in 2018 against the 9.7% recorded in 2016 under the Mahama government.

Our worst is better than your best…,” he added.

Barely 24 hours later, the opposition party held a forum addressed by Bolgatanga Central Parliamentarian, Isaac Adongo, to counter the figures the Vice President had churned.

However, speaking Saturday, on MultiTV/Joy FM’s news analysis programme Newsfile, Kweku Baako agreed with the position of Dr. Bawumia whom he said, “did not lie.”

He made reference to an aspect of the executive report on the National Economic Forum organised by the government at Senchi in 2014, two years into the Mahama administration.

In that report was the admission that “almost every government leaves with a less than desirable macroeconomic situation and the government that will succeed it spends the next one to two years bringing the economy back from the brink.”

According to the veteran journalist, Dr. Bawumia and his team have had to use the last two years to clear the mess created by the Mahama administration “inspite of all the achievements that have been chalked between 2009 and 2016.”

In the context of the realist, “Bawumia is right to say they’ve done better,” he rated, after an “item-by-item” comparison of how the two administrations have fared with regard to managing the economy, in the first two years in government.
