A Ghanaian woman, Mercy Yaaba Bredu, has died in China after reportedly collapsing at an airport shortly after arriving in the country to pursue her master’s degree.
Bredu, a former Vice President of the Association of Students of English (ASSENS) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), reportedly left Ghana on Monday, August 24, 2026, to begin a new chapter of her academic journey in China.
According to reports, her trip took a tragic turn shortly after she arrived in the Asian country. She reportedly became unwell during the journey, with accounts indicating that she complained of heart pain while on the flight.
Upon arrival at the airport in China, Bredu was reportedly receiving a bouquet of flowers when she suddenly collapsed. She was subsequently rushed to a hospital, where medical personnel attended to her.
Despite the efforts to provide her with medical care, she reportedly died on Wednesday, August 26, only two days after leaving Ghana.
The news has reportedly shocked her family, friends, former classmates and colleagues, particularly members of the ASSENS community at UEW, where she previously served in a leadership position.
Bredu had reportedly graduated with first-class honours and had secured scholarship opportunities to further her education in both the United States and China. She ultimately chose China, where she planned to pursue a master’s degree while also exploring opportunities in the import business.
