Ablakwa invites US Ambassador over Trump tariff

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that he has invited the US Ambassador to Ghana for a meeting regarding the imposition of a 10% tariff increase.

According to the Minister, the meeting aims to allow the United States Government to clarify the basis for the tariff hike.

Ghana, along with several other countries, has been affected by the recent upward revision of tariffs, with Ghana facing a 10% tariff increase imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration.

The decision to impose a 10% tariff on Ghana and other nations forms part of executive orders signed by President Trump, and has been met with criticism from many trading countries, including Ghana. Concerns have been raised about the impact on international trade and diplomacy.

Ghana, a key trading partner of the United States, is among the nations that will be negatively affected by this new tariff order. The order targets exports entering the US market and has created uncertainty about its long-term implications.

The 10% baseline tariff will come into effect on April 5, 2025. Some of the countries facing this increase, including Ghana, are concerned about the impact on their economies.

Minister Ablakwa’s invitation seeks to clarify the rationale behind the tariff hike and to further deliberate on other pressing matters with the US Ambassador, Virginia Palmer.

When contacted, the Minister confirmed the invitation and stated that he would brief Ghanaians on the outcome of the meeting with the US representatives on the matter
