A Moment of Determination: Former President Kufuor Walks to Greet Asantehene

A truly remarkable and heartwarming moment, showcasing immense determination and respect, has captivated Ghanaians. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Ghana’s oldest-living former president, who for the greater part of recent years has been confined to a wheelchair, was seen taking steps to pay his respects to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The poignant scene was captured in a video shared on Facebook by the Daily Graphic. It unfolded during the final day of the funeral rites for the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Nana Osei Bonsu II, an event where the Asantehene was sitting in state. While former President Kufuor has consistently attended major public events and engagements despite his reliance on a wheelchair, this particular moment marked a significant departure from his usual mobility.

In a display of sheer will and with the assistance of several strong men, the “gentle giant” was carefully lifted upright. Supported under his armpits and with one person providing stability at his waist, John Agyekum Kufuor was then slowly guided up the stairs towards where the King of the Asantes was regally seated.

Although the video lacked audio, the visual narrative was powerfully expressive. The Asantehene’s face reflected a complex mix of emotions as the former president approached him. His expression conveyed both pleasant joy at the gesture and discernible concern for Kufuor’s well-being. There was also a subtle look on the Asantehene’s face, almost as if to say, “You really didn’t need to bother so much,” suggesting that this arduous effort was likely a personal wish expressly requested by the former president himself.

The brief interaction between the two highly respected statesmen was a beautiful and touching moment, symbolizing deep respect and an enduring bond. After exchanging greetings, former President Kufuor was then carefully assisted back to his seat, leaving a lasting impression of courage and reverence. This extraordinary effort by President Kufuor serves as a powerful testament to his unwavering determination and profound respect for traditional authority.
