Foreign retailers to petition the President, Nana Akufo-Addo
Foreign retailers in the country, particularly Nigerians have indicated they will petition the President, Nana Akufo-Addo to stop attacks on them by their Ghanaian counterparts.
The Nigerian traders complained last week they were being attacked by their counterparts at Suame Magazine in Kumasi, for operating in the retail industry.
Speaking on an Accra based radio station, President of the Nigeria-Ghana Relations, Yahaya Alhassan appealed to President Akufo-Addo to call to order Ghanaian traders in the various markets who are removing foreign business people.
He said the foreign traders have no intention of taking over the businesses of their Ghanaian counterparts. Mr. Alhassan expressed their commitment towards fulfilling every duty required of them as they operate in the country.
He said they are prepared to collaborate with authorities especially the Ministry of Trade and Industry, to bring the impasse to rest. Meanwhile the Committee on Retail Trade set up by the Sector Ministry to protect local retailers has been asked to continue with its work.
In a joint statement issued by the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), said the decision was to ensure peace, sanity and order in the retail market, whilst ensuring compliance with relevant local laws and regulations.
Local retailers have accused foreigners of taking over their businesses and flooding the market with substandard goods. They also accuse them of evading taxes.
