Atuguba displayed intensive knowledge during 2012 election petition – Sophia Akuffo

Justice William Atuguba exhibited good and intensive knowledge of law during the 2012 election petition case, Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has said.

According to her, he brilliantly guided the contending parties and led the country through eight months of election petition amidst controversies with some suggesting the court verdict was rigged.

“I’ve known and admired Atuguba for many years. It was the election petition for 2013 that brought him into the homes and minds of the general public. Taking on a duty that was as noble as it was delicate, he guided the parties and led the whole nation through eight months,’’ she established.

Speaking at a public lecture held to honour Justice William Atuguba, who retired on the 1st July 2018 after 22 years with the Judiciary, Madam Akuffo said he sometimes played the role of a Chief Justice which he handled with commitment on each occasion.

“Justice Atuguba often had to act as chief justice and on each occasion, he handled the duty with characteristics excellence and commitment”. She said

Retired Justice, William Atuguba worked as one of the longest-serving justices of the supreme court of the land.

Justice William Atuguba became a household name when he led the nine-member panel of judges that decided the fate 2012 Election Petition.

They ruled in favour of the NDC giving the ‘go ahead’ to the Electoral Commission’s declaration of John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the general polls.
