Award winning Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has waded into the ongoing controversy courted by the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic CongressSammy Gyamfi.

On Tuesday, June 2, 2020, the NDC spokesperson posted a cartoon artwork which according to the ongoing reactions has been described as insensitive to the unfortunate death of Black-American George Floyd who died as a result of a police officer kneeling on his neck for several minutes during an arrest.

The artwork shared by Sammy Gyamfi depicted Ghana’s Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensah, and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo choking Ghanaians with a new voter register.

Reacting to the backlash that followed the sharing of the cartoon, Sammy Gyamfi later wrote on Facebook “Floyd was choked to death, while screaming for breathe. In GH today, the Jean Mensah-led EC is seeking to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters through a xenophobic voter register. The potential victims of this grave injustice, are screaming for breathe. They are screaming for their inalienable right to vote.

“Nothing wrong with sharing a cartoon which draws a parallel between the painful xenophobic murder of George Floyd, and the evil attempt by the GH EC to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters through a xenophobic voter register.

“Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere. This is a serious matter, not a joke.”

But reacting to the artwork and the subsequent defence Sammy Gyamfi sought to give, Sarkodie in a tweet said while he believes that Sammy Gyamfi‘s intention was not to make a mockery of the death of George Floyd, the issues remains a sensitive and serious one which make it wrong for NDC communicator to draw political points off.

Sarkodie thus urged Sammy Gyamfi to retract and take his post down.

“Naa my brother we all go wrong sometimes… I will believe your intention wasn’t to joke with these serious n very sensitive issues, but you still wrong just do what’s right…. retract n take it down,” he tweeted.
