5 drinks packed with antioxidants that may rival green tea

Green tea is widely recognized for its antioxidant content, particularly compounds such as catechins and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). However, it is not the only beverage that can provide the body with antioxidant compounds.

Experts have highlighted several other drinks that can be included in a varied diet to increase antioxidant intake. These include coffee, berry juice, hibiscus tea, pomegranate juice and pure hot cocoa.

1. Coffee

Coffee is an important source of antioxidants, particularly chlorogenic acids and other polyphenols. Research has linked these compounds with antioxidant activity and their potential role in reducing oxidative stress.

Because coffee is consumed regularly by many people, it can make a meaningful contribution to overall antioxidant intake. However, the nutritional benefits can vary depending on what is added to the drink.

2. Berry juice

Juices made from antioxidant-rich berries can provide anthocyanins, compounds responsible for the deep red, purple and blue colours found in many berries.

Berry juices made from fruits such as acai, maqui and wild blueberries may therefore provide another way to increase antioxidant intake. Choosing options with little or no added sugar can help keep the drink a healthier choice.

3. Hibiscus tea

Hibiscus tea is another beverage rich in polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds. The drink is known for its deep red colour and distinctive flavour.

Some research has also examined hibiscus in relation to cardiovascular health, although it should not be regarded as a replacement for medical treatment.

4. Pomegranate juice

Pomegranate juice contains a range of antioxidant compounds, including polyphenols. Studies of antioxidant-rich beverages have also found pomegranate juice to have relatively high antioxidant activity compared with several other fruit juices.

Because fruit juice generally contains less fibre than whole fruit, nutrition experts recommend making whole fruits and a varied diet part of overall healthy eating rather than relying heavily on juice.

5. Pure hot cocoa

Hot cocoa made with unsweetened or minimally processed cocoa can also provide antioxidant flavanols. Darker cocoa products tend to contain more of these plant compounds than heavily processed, highly sweetened chocolate drinks.

Experts emphasize that the goal should not be to find a single “best” antioxidant drink. Instead, consuming a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds can provide a broader range of beneficial plant compounds.

Green tea remains a nutritious beverage, but adding different antioxidant-rich foods and drinks to the diet can provide greater variety.
