The Vice Dean of Students (DOS) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Otchere Addai Mensah has advised the government to not give consideration to the debate on cutting Undergraduate education to 3 years instead of the current 4 years, MyNewsGh.com reports.
Speaking on Pure Morning Drive with Kwame Adinkra, the KNUST Vice-DOS explained that, the quality of University education will be affected and that will be dangerous for the country if the debate is given substance and later suffices.
He, however, lauded the government on starting the debate on the reviewing the curriculum of education in the country rather than dwell on the number of years spent at the university by students for their first-degree programmes.
In his view, the only way by which the universities can adopt the three-year system is to strengthen the Senior High School (SHS) to produce candidates who may be able capable to adjust to the three years without any hitches.
“Not until we strengthen the secondary system so that the products from there will be good enough for the three years, we will be making a great mistake. The focus should be on the curriculum, the teachers and their dedication to their job but any attempt to change from four years to three years will be detrimental and affect the quality of products produced at the university”, he disclosed on the show MyNewsGh.com monitored.
Dr. Otchere Addai, however, observed that it is fair for such a discussion to take place about the curricula on SHS and JHS on what needs to be done if the products are to merit a 3-year Bachelor programme.
“The real issue of this discussion is the quality of students we are producing at SHS”, he asserted.
