Wuogon by-polls: NCCE condemns shooting incident
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has condemned the shooting incident that took place at La-Bawaleshie during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
The Commission cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to desist from acts that could create election-related violence.
A statement signed by Samuel Asare Akuamaoh, Deputy Chair Operations, said: “The NCCE condemns in no uncertain terms reports of violent attacks and shootings at the by-election at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in Accra.”
The commission is appalled by the development and cautions the NDC and the NPP to respect the voting rights of the citizens
“It is unfortunate that political parties especially the NPP and the NDC have continually disowned existing political thugs but these groups continue to provide them services that hitherto, ought to be provided by the traditional security institutions.”
Meanwhile the Ghana Police Service has said no death has been recorded in Thursday’s shooting incident at La-Bawaleshie.
Six persons were, however, injured in the course of the melee.
The Police, in a statement, said calm has been restored to the area and the six injured persons are responding to treatment at the Legon Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital.
The statement further noted that the Inspector General of Police has directed the Director-General/Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to speed up investigations into the incident.
The general public, especially voters and residents of the constituency, have been encouraged to remain calm and go about their duties freely without fear, as more police officers have been deployed there to ensure law and order.
The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) boycotted the elections as a result of the shooting.
