Many trapped, others feared dead after galamsey pit collapses at Akyem Wenchi

At least four people have been confirmed dead, and about 20 others are reportedly trapped after an illegal mining pit collapsed at Akyem Wenchi in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

While the exact cause of the collapse remains unknown, rescue operations are currently underway.

Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ambulance Service have been deployed to the scene to assist in rescue efforts.

Authorities are yet to provide an official statement on the number of casualties or the condition of the trapped individuals as operations continue.
