Lamine Yamal is Barcelona’s new no. 10

It’s official: Lamine Yamal will be the new No. 10 at FC Barcelona. The La Masia graduate inherits one of the most iconic shirt numbers in club history, following the departure of Ansu Fati, who had worn the number since Lionel Messi’s exit.

The announcement was made internally at the club’s offices on the same day Yamal turned 18. It was also accompanied by the confirmation of his contract renewal, securing his long-term future with the team until 2031.

The official news came on Wednesday, July 17, as Yamal celebrated his 18th birthday. Alongside his contract extension, Barcelona confirmed the change in squad number. The No. 10 had remained vacant since Ansu Fati was loaned to Monaco, and the club chose to hand it to one of its brightest homegrown talents.

Yamal previously wore No. 27 and then No. 19. This will be his first full season as a first-team player with a proper starter’s number.

The No. 10 is one of the most prestigious shirts in Barcelona’s history. It has been worn by legends such as Diego Maradona, Romário, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and most famously, Lionel Messi, who wore it for over a decade until 2021.

After Messi’s departure, Ansu Fati took on the number before going on loan to Monaco for the 2024/25 season.

The club also announced that Lamine Yamal has signed a new deal running until 2031, with a release clause exceeding €1 billion. The winger was a standout performer for Barça last season and also impressed with Spain at Euro 2024.

By handing him the No. 10 and renewing his deal, Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to homegrown talent and bets on Yamal as a key piece in their sporting project for years to come.
