The National Identification Authority (NIA) has so far registered over 18 million Ghanaians, including 190,775 within the first half of 2025.
The Authority has also registered 210,498 foreigners, with 10,290 of them registered between January and June 2025. Of the 18 million Ghanaians enrolled, 17,534,360 have been issued with their Ghana Cards.
The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, made this known during the Ministry’s Mid-Year Review Report presentation at a press conference on Monday, July 14.
Mr. Muntaka explained that the registration drive has facilitated integration with key national systems such as the Ghana Revenue Authority, the National Health Insurance Scheme, and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), thereby enhancing financial inclusion and national security.
He also noted that the NIA had installed advanced security systems to boost fiscal and cyber resilience, while expanding its operations through additional premium centres nationwide.
The Minister revealed that the Authority had successfully cleared a backlog of over 600,000 unissued cards across its 292 operational offices.
“This is very, very important because we came to meet a backlog of people who had registered but didn’t have their cards,” Mr. Muntaka said.
“I can report that within the last six months, we made available over 600,000 blank cards to ensure these backlogs were cleared. And I’m happy to say that if you visit the National Identification Authority headquarters today, you’ll be amazed. This is a place where people used to queue for hours, losing productive time, simply to get or renew their cards.”
He attributed the improved situation to the introduction of a text message-based appointment system, which schedules registrants for specific times and reduces overcrowding.
Mr. Muntaka further disclosed that the NIA had piloted an online application and appointment platform. He noted that Premium Centres are being established in partnership with private sector actors to provide 24-hour services across the country.
“We call it the Prestige Registration Service. It is being implemented with partners like SSNIT, the Ghana Commercial Bank, and four private firms in Greater Accra and Ashanti. These centres offer exclusive home and office enrolment services, extended hours, and fast-track options,” he said.
“So, you could even request for someone to come to your home to register or replace your card — but of course, at a premium,” he added.
