10 Dead, 3 Injured in Fatal Lone Crash on Ijebu-Ode–Ibadan Expressway

At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, and three others injured in a lone crash involving a Mitsubishi bus along the Ijebu-Ode–Ibadan Expressway. The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Friday near Ome Bridge, Awa, in the Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement released on Sunday.

According to Akinbiyi, the crash involved a Mitsubishi bus with registration number EJ829-LSR, which was carrying 15 passengers at the time.

Tragically, seven male and three female passengers lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries. A toddler and one adult passenger miraculously escaped without harm.

Preliminary investigations by TRACE indicate that the accident was caused by overspeeding and reckless overtaking.

“Eyewitnesses said the driver wrongly overtook another vehicle at high speed and could not regain control after noticing an oncoming vehicle,” Akinbiyi stated.
“The driver veered off the road, struck an abandoned gravel pile beside the bridge, and plunged into the river.”

The deceased victims have been taken to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital morgue, where the injured are also receiving treatment.

Akinbiyi issued a renewed call for road safety, urging motorists to avoid speeding and to refrain from night travel, which often comes with limited visibility and heightened risk.
