Police dismantle phone tampering syndicate in Wassa Akropong

The operation, which took place on June 19, 2025, resulted in the apprehension of two individuals suspected of being involved in the illegal activity.

The suspects, identified as Machiavelli Arthur and Gideon Ebenezer, were arrested during an intelligence-led operation.

A report by 3news.com on June 26, 2025, indicated that preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate was engaged in altering mobile phones for potentially fraudulent purposes.

Investigators discovered that the duo employed sophisticated software and electronic tools to illegally unlock, flash, and bypass security features on mobile phones.

However, during a raid on their hideout in Wassa Akropong, police found a cache of tampered phones and specialised equipment used in the illicit operations.

These actions allowed defaulting customers to continue using devices purchased on credit without fulfilling their payment obligations.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

Meanwhile, authorities have also recovered laptops and other electronic devices believed to have been utilised in the operation.

It is suspected that the group may have been operating for an extended period, causing significant financial losses to unsuspecting victims.

During the interrogation, both suspects reportedly admitted to their involvement in the illegal activities.

The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

They also encourage anyone who suspects their phone has been tampered with to report it to the nearest station.

“The suspects will be arraigned in court in the coming days,” the authorities said.

The police have assured the public of their commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of citizens in the Western Region.
