Referee Headbutts Player in Shocking Cameroon Football Playoff

A crucial playoff match in Cameroon’s Elite Two division descended into chaos on Monday, June 23, 2025, when the match referee shockingly headbutted a player during a heated on-field confrontation.

The incident occurred during a fiercely contested playoff clash between ISOHSA de Limbe and APEJES de Mfou, as both clubs vied for promotion in one of the country’s most competitive football divisions.

The already tense atmosphere escalated when Jefter Arrey, captain of ISOHSA, approached the referee to protest a controversial penalty decision. Instead of a standard caution or card, Arrey was met with an astounding act of aggression: an unprovoked headbutt directly to his face from the referee.

The impact of the blow reportedly left the Limbe captain with a bloody nose, necessitating medical intervention and causing the game to be halted. Stunned teammates, officials, and fans watched in disbelief as the referee, showing no remorse, then evaded Arrey’s instinctive retaliatory kick.

The incident has ignited a wave of outrage throughout the Cameroonian football community, with many describing it as one of the most disgraceful scenes in recent memory.

This scandal comes at a particularly inopportune time for the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), led by football icon Samuel Eto’o. FECAFOOT is already under increasing scrutiny regarding its management of refereeing standards and overall matchday discipline. This latest event has intensified calls for sweeping reforms and stringent disciplinary action against the implicated official.
