Deplorable Ntotroso-Sunyani Road Blamed for Fatal Highway Robbery and Rising Fear

A tragic incident on the Ntotroso-Sunyani Highway in the Bono Region has sparked renewed outrage and fear among residents and commuters, following the fatal shooting of a driver last Friday. The as-yet-unidentified driver was transporting passengers in a Ford vehicle from Sunyani to Bibiani when the attack occurred.
According to Richard Adu, the Assemblyman for the Atronie Electoral Area, the driver was shot in the head during the daylight robbery. Two passengers also sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, where the driver’s body has been deposited in the morgue.
The incident has amplified long-standing concerns about the Ntotroso-Sunyani road, which serves as a vital link between the Ahafo and Bono Regions. Residents, speaking to Adom News, have expressed profound fear, asserting that the severely deteriorated state of the road has transformed it into a dangerous haven for highway robbers.
“The road has become a hotspot for armed robbers who frequently attack motorists with impunity,” lamented one resident, recalling that the road was originally constructed under former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
The rampant insecurity has had a crippling effect on daily life. Passengers interviewed expressed immense fear about using the route due to the high frequency of robberies. A female farmer from the Atronie farming community shared her deep concern, revealing that she and her colleagues are now unable to access their farms, fearing rampant robberies and sporadic gunfire.
Locals firmly believe that the worsening situation is well-known to security agencies, with the deplorable road conditions being the primary enabler for these recurring criminal acts. The community is issuing an urgent and passionate plea to government authorities for immediate intervention to rehabilitate the road and restore safety to the vital corridor.
