Here’s why police personnel have been restricted from moving within Bawku

In recent weeks, there have been tensions at Binduri in the Upper East Region, with numerous killings of innocent persons, including a U-turn situation where police personnel and their families have been attacked, all links to the ongoing Bawku conflict.

The most recent attack of officers have raised concerns and questions on the rationale behind the unidentified gunmen targeting security personnel, another situation that threatens the security system of the country.

In the bid to curbing the rate of deaths among the officers, the Ghana Police Service has issued an urgent directive, banning the movement of police personnel and their families to Bawku and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region.

A wireless message from the Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, conveyed through the Upper East Regional Police Headquarters, indicated that personnel and their relatives have become targets of unknown assailants at Bawku and its environs.

According to the directive, effective immediately, no police officers or their family members are to travel to Bawku, including areas such as Pusiga and Binduri.

The message stressed that the ban affects both indigenous and non-indigenous personnel.

The IGP further instructed that officers already deployed for operational duties within these high-risk zones must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and operate under armored escort for safety.

Additionally, the communique, according to adomonline.com, noted that Garu could also pose significant danger, urging all officers to take note and strictly adhere to the directive.
