Old video of Abedi Pele resurfaces amid Chelsea goalkeeper criticism

Abedi Pele’s sensational header in the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has resurfaced online following Mikel Merino’s goal in Arsenal’s win over Chelsea on Sunday, March 17, 2025.

Abedi Pele’s header was the equalizer for Ghana in the semi-final clash against Nigeria 33 years ago.

The African football legend expertly flicked a corner into the far post from a difficult angle to restore parity in the game.

A video of the goal was shared on X (formerly Twitter) in response to Chelsea fans who expressed frustrations over a similar goal they conceded against Arsenal in the London Derby.

Merino connected with Martin Ødegaard’s corner to score the decisive goal at the Emirates Stadium, securing Arsenal’s victory.

Many fans have blamed the goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for his poor positioning leading up to the ‘cheap’ goal.

The frustrated Chelsea fan, with the username @hasanalnaqour, took to X to express disbelief.

“How can you concede that!!!!,” he wrote as captain for the video of Merino’s header.
