The two students are Akosuah Owusuaa, a third-year forest resource technology student, and Bertha Kookale Hammond, a final-year English student.
While details of their deaths remain limited, GhanaWeb has sighted a statement from the Association of Students of English, KNUST, dated March 9, 2025, announcing the death of Bertha.
“It is with great sorrow that I write to you regarding the devastating loss of one of our very own, Bertha Kookale Hammond, a final-year student of English who has passed away, leaving behind a gaping void that cannot be filled. We extend our deepest condolences to Bertha’s family, her friends, and loved ones during this agonising moment. May we find comfort in the memories of her bright smile and sheer enthusiasm. As a department, we mourn the loss of a dedicated and talented student and will dearly miss her creativity and presence,” the statement said.
The association entreated all members to wear black on Monday and Wednesday in mourning their colleague.
Meanwhile, Akosuah Owusuaa is also reported to have felt unwell prior to her death on March 9, 2025.
The recent deaths come on the heels of similar cases recorded at KNUST in recent months.
The lifeless body of Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year Biological Sciences student, was found near the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre on February 27, 2025, with the cause of death still under investigation by the university and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Initial police examination revealed marks of violence on her body, raising suspicions of foul play.
CCTV footage analysis led to the arrest of a suspect, Daniel Tuffuor, a 21-year-old fellow student, on the same day.
Tuffuor, reportedly her boyfriend, was apprehended after being identified on camera and found with clothing linked to the crime.
The investigation later recovered Joana’s laptop and phone, hidden behind Flint Hostel, providing potential digital evidence.
Tuffuor was arraigned on February 28, 2025, and remanded, with the next court date set for March 17, 2025.
