Speaking after appearing in court with his client, human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, Adeyanju described Adejobi as a false PRO of the Nigeria Police Force who arrests citizens for criticising the Inspector General of Police and the police institution.
Adeyanju’s comment comes after Adejobi arrested a man who had criticised the police following the abduction of the former DIG’s wife. He mentioned that his client has been in custody for ten days.
According to the lawyer, despite the parent’s efforts to apologise to Adejobi, they were humiliated, and the police officers who allowed them to see him were locked up.
Expressing his disappointment at Adejobi’s actions, Adeyanju said, “The Nigerian people must be mindful of Muyiwa Adejobi. The false PRO at the Force headquarters. This guy thinks that police work is about surfing the internet and arresting people that criticise the police. He thinks that false PRO work is about jailing people, especially people that criticise the IGP, the police institution. Was this how Frank Mba and other PROs were conducting PRO work at the headquarter?
A client of ours who was arrested on the instruction of Muyiwa Adejobi for making a post about the abduction of the former DIG’s wife. They arrested him and he has spent ten days in custody. The parents went to see Muyiwa Adejobi to beg him. The parents came to our office and briefed us. If you see the level of ridicule that he levelled on them. It has been alleged that he locked three of the officers who allowed the parents to gain access to see him, to beg him.
Who the hell does this guy think he is? A bloody false PRO. Is this how we can promote accountability in government? Is this the essence of policing? Is this how to do PRO work? He thinks false PRO work is Bole Kaja in Lagos, where people are forced to come down from the bus and get into fisticuffs and fight? He thinks the false PRO is Oshodi where people will just be fighting, grabbing and engaging in fisticuffs.
So, we are taking decisive action against people like that because they are antidemocratic elements in the country. Muyowa Adejobi is guilty of suppressing citizens rights and freedom of speech in the country. And we are going to take appropriate legal and constitutional actions against him. To serve as a deterrent against other people like him in the police force who continue to victimize and witch-hunt people.
This is also to sound a serious note of warning to the cybercrime centre of the Nigerian Police, that the work of the cybercrime center is not to be arresting people who are opposing or criticising government or who are criticising the police authority, or calling for accountability that their work is to go after internet fraud, cyber terrorism and cyber criminals not going and arresting people that criticise the IG, Commissioner of Police, or people who expose corruption.”
