EC Officials use torchlights as blackout hits Sarpeiman

A blackout has hit the entire township of Sarpeiman, forcing EC officials to rely on torchlights to facilitate the balloting process.

A video circulating online shows residents making their way to the polling station with flashlights, while EC officials are also seen using flashlights to sort and count the ballots.

Earlier in the day, the voting process at the Sarpeiman center in the Amasaman constituency was disrupted by rain, and this blackout threatens to create even more chaos.

The Amasaman constituency is being fiercely contested by the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Mr. Yahya Kassim, the parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who defeated the incumbent MP, Akwasi Owusu Afrifa-Mensah, in the NPP’s parliamentary primaries in January 2024.

Despite the blackout, counting is still underway, with EC officials and residents monitoring the process using their phones and torchlights. However, some individuals allege that the power outage is a tactic to rig or manipulate the votes.
