It is wrong for Gov’t to support Hajj pilgrims- Mohammed Abass
Political Science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mr.Mohammed Abass has admonished government to desist from funding Hajj pilgrims as the practice is not only wrong but a huge drain on the national coffers.
In an exclusive interview with MynewsGh.com, the Public Administration Expert expunged that, the practice of supporting Hajj pilgrims is one that is not born out of national interest but to satisfy party interest, woo political support and reward their faithful.
Mr. Abass remarked that, the act is not only unacceptable but highly discriminatory as certain individuals who usually do not pledge their allegiance to the government in power are exempted from enjoying the
benefits.
He advised the government to at best stick to playing a facilitatory role by providing traveling documents like passport forms, interact with the embassy to ensure maximum safety since it’s a mass travel and the individuals can’t play those roles.
‘The government can arrange for accommodation but leave the payment to the individuals who can afford, same should be done in the case of flight bookings.
Any form of direct support like buying tickets for pilgrims, paying for their accommodation and other stipends is wrong and unacceptable’. He said.
