T-pain the tax collector – Nigerians react to 5% tax on gaming, betting, others

Despite the economic hardship, the Nigerian government has announced plans to impose a 5% tax on telecommunication, gaming and betting services in the country.

This was revealed in the Economic Stabilisation Bills recently sent to the National Assembly by the Federal Government.

The bill aims to introduce excise duties on services such as telecommunications, gaming, gambling, lotteries, and betting provided in Nigeria.

This means that Nigerians using telecommunications and betting services will have to pay more as part of the government’s efforts to revamp the country’s tax framework.

“Services, including telecommunications, gaming, gambling, betting and lotteries, however described, provided in Nigeria shall be charged with duties of excise at the rates specified under the Tenth Schedule to this Act in a manner as may be prescribed by the Service.”

Nigerians have expressed displeasure with the recent policies under President Bola Tinubu’s administration as they lament the country’s economic situation.

Many have taken to social media to share their thoughts.
