Accra: Prepare for massive earthquake after Sunday tremor – Expert
Nicholas Opoku, a Senior Seismologist at the Geological Survey Authority, has warned the country to brace itself of an impending earthquake following an earth tremor which occurred in parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, 9 December 2018.
The tremor occurred around 7:50 am around Weija, Gbawe and surrounding areas in the Ga South Municipality and caused a scare among residents.
The tremor caused some buildings to shake for some few minutes and some residents said they thought it was the Second Coming of Christ.
According to Mr Opoku, the tremor is a sign for authorities to take the necessary steps to prevent a major disaster.
“We should be scared if where these events are occurring have human exposure, buildings and societal activities.
“We have been talking about earthquakes all this while. The fault systems that give rise to these earthquakes are active and they can give a big earthquake in future which can be disastrous.
“If we don’t build there at all we have low risks,” he told Joy FM.
A similar earth tremor was reported in March this year at Weija-Broadcasting, Sampa Valley, SCC, West Hills Mall area, Gbawe and Anyaa, amongst others.
Residents said they experienced the tremor while they slept at dawn.
Two other tremors followed within that same period.
It will be recalled that Class 91.3FM reported in 2016 of a possible calamity as part of the Executive Breakfast Show’s Waiting Disaster series.
It was reported that up the hills at Weija and its environs, the adverse effects of sand mining and quarrying were visible, with gullies on top of the hill left as remnants, while a number of buildings had the soil at their foundation washed away.
The buildings are virtually suspending and risks collapsing as the foundations have been eaten away badly.
