N/R: REGSEC moves to calm tension in Dagbon

The Northern Region Security Council has calmed tension following the arrest of the Regent of Nakun, Sergeant Adams Bawa Mahama.

The regent is said to have been arrested by the military for performing the final funeral rites of his father and paying homage to another Regent.

That action, reports say could compromise security in the area as well as the Dagbon roadmap for peace.

Sections of the residents in Dagbon were unhappy about the arrest and demanded the release of Bawa Mahama.

The residents say the arrest was part of activities to intimidate chiefs in the area.

The arrest comes days before the official funeral ceremonies of the late Mahamudu Abdulai and Yakubu Andani.

The funeral ceremonies of these two are a crucial part of the roadmap for peace in Dagbon, an area which has been a harbinger for conflict for decades.

After a decade-long mediation between the Abudus and Andanis by three eminent chiefs, led the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a roadmap was finally announced late last month.

Key amongst the roadmap for peace was the performance of the funerals of the late Ya-Nas after which a new Ya-Na will be selected and enskinned.

Joy News’ Tamale correspondent Hashmin Mohammed reports there is calm after some youth in the area demanded the release of Bawa Mahama.

Reports say he has since been released as the security strives to maintain peace.
