The Confederation of African Football (CAF) in a letter dated Sunday, October 6, 2024, asked James Kwasi Appiah to resign from one of his two significant roles at the Ghana Football Association and Sudan.
Kwasi Appiah has been holding the role of Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council (Exco) member after being voted into the position in 2023.
He qualified for the role due to his position as a member of Asante Kotoko’s Interm Management Committee. He landed the role while serving as Sudan’s head coach.
CAF in its letter cited that the former Black Stars head coach holds conflicting roles which sparks issues of “conflict of interest” given that Ghana and Sudan are in the same group for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The statement also noted that the situation is against both CAF statutes and the FIFA Code of Ethics, thus suggesting that the manager temporarily steps down from one role.
“Resolve the conflict of interest, including, at minimum, temporarily stepping down from one of the two roles until the conclusion of the competition,” part of the statement read.
Kwasi Appiah has, accordingly, stepped down from his role as an Executive Council member until the end of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Ghana will face Sudan in a doubleheader in the 2025 AFCON with the first leg slated for October 10 and the return leg on October 15, 2024.
