Why Lamine Yamal’s football boots feature the flags of Morocco and Equatorial Guinea
Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal’s descent from two African countries has made him even more admirable to many on the continent, thanks to his impressive performances.
According to former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Sannie Daara, Yamal has roots in both Morocco and Equatorial Guinea.
Daara explained that Yamal’s mother hails from Equatorial Guinea, while his father is from Morocco. Despite this, Yamal chose to play for Spain at the international level.
Notably, Yamal has designed the flags of Morocco and Equatorial Guinea on his football boots as a sign of respect to his parents and roots.
“Lamine Yamal, at just 16, is the youngest scorer in Euro history. His mother hails from Equatorial Guinea, and his father is from Morocco. Eligible to represent both countries, he proudly wears all three flags on his boots when playing for Spain,” Sannie wrote on X.
The youngster was one of the standout players who helped Spain win Euro 2024.
He assisted Nico Williams in scoring the opening goal in the 47th minute.
After Cole Palmer’s equalizer, Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal for Spain in the 86th minute, assisted by Marc Cucurella.
Spain’s 2-1 win over England crowned them champions of the 2024 European Championship for the fourth time.
Yamal was awarded the Best Young Player of the Tournament after scoring once and providing four assists throughout the tournament.
