Ahafo Council Of Chiefs Bans Christmas Conventions Ahead Of Referendum

Ahafo Council of Chiefs in the Brong Ahafo Region has banned Christmas conventions in the traditional area ahead of head of the referendum for the creation of the new regions slated for December, 27th 2018.

According to the Chiefs, the Christians have large population in the region, hence the need for the ban to woo more eligible voters to participate in the impending referendum for them to vote “yes” to get the 80 percent in order to pave the way for the creation of the Ahafo region to enhance development.

The Organizer of the Ahafo Council of Chiefs and Omanhene of Hwediem Traditional Area, Osuodumgya Barima Apea-Dwaah Boafo 11 made the announcement at stakeholder’s meeting in Hwediem on Sunday, 25th November, 2018.

“The creation of the Ahafo Region is vital and is our interest so we have vowed not to allow any Christmas conventions in this traditional area until the referendum is held on December, 27th because if we allow them to hold conventions our efforts to get the Ahafo region will prove futile” Osuodumgya said.

He added that the Council of Chiefs has engaged all the church Leaders in the Ahafo Traditional Area to reschedule their conventions either before or after the referendum.

“We are leaving no stone unturned in our quest to have the Ahafo region for developments for that matter the churches may organise their programmes after the said date since such functions cannot take place simultaneously with the referendum  to get people to vote “yes” to get the much awaited region” he added.

The creation of the regions, according to provisions in chapter two of the 1992 constitution requires a referendum that demands at least 80 percent of residents in the affected region(s) to approve of the split.

It is expected that 50 per cent eligible voters would come out to vote, and 80 percent of them must approve the demand for the creation of the region during the referendum.

The regions expected to be divided include; the Northern, Western, Volta and Brong-Ahafo.

Osuodumgya Barima Apea-Dwaah Boafo 11 maintained that the ban is in the right direction and they will continue to with the education on the referendum to meet the constitutional requirement.

He therefore called on the people of Ahafo to join the campaign for the creation of the region.
