Customs destroy over 1000 illegally imported mattresses

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has set ablaze over 1,000 seized mattresses.

The exercise was carried out under strict supervision of the National Security and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) at the Kpone landfill site.

According to the Collection Officer at the State Warehouse, Lawrence Annang, the division will set more of such goods on fire in the coming weeks as it awaits clearance from the Commissioner General of the Customs Division of the GRA.

Addressing journalists at Tema on Tuesday 12 June 2018, Mr Annang noted that the impounded goods are prohibited from entering the country according to Legislative Instrument (LI) 1580 which was promulgated in 1994.

However, he stressed that permit can be secured from the regulatory bodies for the collection of restricted goods imported into the country.
