31-year-old man jailed 7 years for defiling 5-year-old girl

The Wa Circuit Court has sentenced a 31-year-old man, Issahaku Waris, to seven years’ imprisonment for defiling a five-year-old girl in the Upper West Region.

The court, presided over by His Lordship Jonathan Avoogo, handed down the sentence when the convict appeared on Friday, July 18, 2025.

Waris, a resident of Wa Zongo, committed the offence on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The disturbing case attracted public attention due to the age of the victim and the nature of the crime.

He was arrested two days later, on Saturday, April 26, 2025, by officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) following swift investigations.

Waris was subsequently prosecuted, found guilty, and sentenced.

In delivering his judgment, His Lordship Avoogo emphasized the justice system’s commitment to protecting the rights and safety of vulnerable individuals, especially children.

The Upper West Regional Police Command, in a statement, reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the safety of children and holding perpetrators of sexual abuse accountable.

The Command also urged the public to promptly report all forms of abuse to prevent further harm and ensure justice is served.
