12 candidates compete for Ashanti Council of State position

Twelve (12) candidates, including two women, have officially been cleared by the Electoral Commission to contest for the Ashanti Region’s representative seat on the Council of State.

The candidates, aged between 27 and 68, come from diverse professional backgrounds, including traditional leadership, farming, business, and the media.

According to the statement of the poll, the contenders include Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo, Chief of Agric Nzema, Rose Hamilton CEO of Crystal Rose Ambassador Hostel, Frederick Adjei, Nana Yaw Akuoko, Alexander Nti, Nana Gyedu Kumanin IV, and Nana Kusi Ampofoh II.

Other aspirants are Angel Yirenkyi, Nana Foriwaa Adwoa, Daniel Anarfi Yeboah, Bismark Adjei, and Yaw Owusu Obimpe former Ashanti regional Chairman of NDC and a member of the NDC council of elders.

The election is scheduled for Tuesday, February 11, and will be held at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council in Kumasi.

A total of 86 assembly members, drawn from the 43 district assemblies in the region (two from each district), will form the electoral college responsible for selecting the region’s representative.

Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Osei Nsiah, assured that the election will be conducted fairly and transparently.

He confirmed that the EC had provided all candidates with copies of the nomination of polls—also referred to as the election register—to facilitate their campaigns.

“This is a non-partisan election, and we (EC) expect that the selected assembly members will vote for someone who has the interest of the region at heart,” Nsiah stated.

Addressing concerns over possible disqualifications, Mr. Nsiah dismissed such claims, emphasizing that all nominees remain in contention.

“In fact, no person has been disqualified from this race,” he affirmed.

The upcoming election is expected to be keenly contested, as the selected candidate will play a crucial advisory role in national governance on behalf of the Ashanti Region.
