Women in Mining Ghana Elects New Leadership to Tackle Sector Challenges

The organisation Women in Mining Ghana (WIM Ghana) has elected a new leadership team as part of its drive to address critical issues facing women working in the mining industry. At the top of the list, senior geotechnical engineer Rosemary Oppong Kwasie has been chosen to serve as President, succeeding industry advocate Dr Georgette Barnes Sakyi.

The newly‑selected leadership team was tasked with confronting some of the most pressing challenges in the sector — including gender imbalance in mining roles, occupational safety, access to financing and mining licences, and broader inclusion of women in the supply chain.

In her acceptance remarks, Kwasie affirmed her commitment to advancing WIM Ghana’s mission and called on stakeholders across the mining value chain — companies, regulators, financiers and communities — to collaborate in order to create more opportunities for women. She emphasised that enhancing women’s participation is not only a matter of equity but also contributes to the strength and sustainability of the industry.

The outgoing president, Dr Barnes Sakyi, spoke of the progress achieved under her tenure, noting increased visibility for women in mining and many grassroots training initiatives. She encouraged the new team to build on this foundation and deepen outreach and advocacy efforts.

According to sector stakeholders, WIM Ghana plays a key role in linking women in mining with mentorship, training, networking and policy‑engagement platforms. The election of new leadership comes at a time when the industry is under increasing pressure to ensure safe, lawful and inclusive operations.

By setting clear priorities and mobilising support for women’s economic empowerment, the organisation expects to influence policies related to licensing, mine‑site safety, professional development and financing. The leadership change reflects a strategic pivot toward greater action‑oriented advocacy and stronger stakeholder partnerships.
