Watch videos from joint army, police raid of Hwediem, Dadwene, others

Video footage has emerged of a coordinated raid carried out by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ghana Police Service in the communities of Hwediem and Dadwene, among other locations. The operation took place on Wednesday and targeted suspected perpetrators of attacks on environmental and illegal‑mining enforcement officials.
In one clip, uniformed troops and police officers are seen moving through a wooded area near Hwediem, forcing access into a compound where several motor vehicles are parked. Another video from Dadwene shows a convoy of police vehicles arriving at dawn, with officers deploying tear‑gas and shields as hundreds of locals scatter. Eyewitnesses noted officers making arrests and seizing electronic devices and motorbikes.
Sources say the raid was triggered by recent incidents in which officials from the National Anti‑Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were ambushed while carrying out anti‑galamsey operations—illegal gold‑mining enforcement—leading to injuries among some enforcement agents and journalists. The intelligence‑led operation reportedly sought to disrupt the networks that had been attacking lawful agents in those zones.
While the security agencies have yet to release a full list of suspects detained, the videos have sparked strong public reaction on social media. Many Ghanaians are praising the boldness of the joint forces but also demanding clarity on how the raids will link to prosecutions and whether residents’ rights were respected during the operation.
As of now, no official comment has been made regarding casualties or the findings from the operation. The GAF and Police Service say they will brief the media later.
