WATCH: Police Arrest Notorious Phone Snatchers Along Achimota Forest Stretch

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a group of notorious phone snatchers who had been targeting commuters along the Achimota Forest stretch of the Accra–Kumasi Highway, following growing public complaints about frequent robberies in the area.

The arrests followed intensified police patrols after several road users reported being attacked and robbed of their mobile phones while travelling through the forest corridor. The stretch has become a hotspot for criminal activity due to its dense vegetation and isolated sections, which provide easy escape routes for offenders.

According to police sources, the suspects operated in coordinated groups, often targeting passengers in moving vehicles, commercial motorcycles, and pedestrians. They reportedly used speed and force to snatch mobile phones before fleeing into the forest, making it difficult for victims and drivers to pursue them.

Law enforcement officers launched a targeted operation after receiving multiple distress reports from commuters and transport operators. Through intelligence gathering and surveillance, police were able to identify the suspects and carry out arrests in the area.

During the operation, officers reportedly recovered several stolen mobile phones and other items believed to be linked to the suspects’ criminal activities. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the arrested individuals are part of a larger network operating along other major road corridors in Accra.

The Achimota Forest road has long been considered a security concern for commuters, especially during early morning and late evening hours. The recent arrests are part of broader efforts by the police to restore safety along major transport routes and curb roadside crimes that threaten public security.

Police authorities have commended members of the public for reporting incidents promptly, stressing that community cooperation is vital in tackling crime. They also advised commuters to remain vigilant, avoid using mobile phones openly while in traffic, and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

Residents and regular road users have welcomed the arrests, expressing relief after weeks of fear and anxiety caused by repeated snatching incidents. Many described the development as a positive step toward restoring confidence and safety on the busy highway.

The suspects are expected to be processed for court, as investigations continue. The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to combating street crime and ensuring that individuals who threaten public safety are dealt with according to the law.
