Walmart Opens First-Ever Walmart-Branded Store in Africa, Bringing Low Prices and Jobs to Johannesburg

Walmart (NYSE: WMT) has officially opened its first Walmart-branded store on the African continent, marking a major milestone for both the retail giant and South Africa’s retail landscape.
Located at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort, the store introduces Walmart’s signature Every Day Low Prices, one-stop shopping convenience, and expanded digital services to local shoppers—just in time for the festive season.
The store’s unveiling comes only 73 days after Walmart confirmed plans to bring the brand to Africa before the end of 2025. Led by an African store manager and staffed by more than 80 newly hired associates, the store is already being celebrated as a win for the local community and economy.
A New Era of Low Prices and Everyday Value
Andrea Albright, Walmart International’s executive vice president and chief growth officer, said the launch reflects more than business expansion—it’s a promise to offer customers consistent savings.
“Opening this first Walmart store in South Africa is about much more than a business milestone; it is a commitment to helping customers save money and live better,” she said. “We’re delivering quality without requiring customers to wait for short-term promotions or worry about fluctuating prices.”
